Project Overview

EcoLife Green is actively working on forest conservation and restoration in the Central Ridge Reserve Forest, specifically along the Jhandewalan to Karolbagh section. This initiative aims to restore the natural green cover, plant native species, and create a sustainable green corridor in the heart of Delhi.

Project Overview

The Central Ridge Reserve Forest is one of Delhi's most important ecological zones. The Jhandewalan to Karolbagh section, spanning approximately 3 kilometers, was identified as a priority area for restoration due to its strategic location and ecological significance.

Key activities include:

• Removal of invasive species like Prosopis juliflora
• Plantation of 2,500+ native trees including Neem, Peepal, Banyan, Amaltas, and Jamun
• Development of a green corridor connecting Jhandewalan Metro Station to Karolbagh
• Installation of signages, benches, and interpretation boards
• Community awareness programs for local residents
• Regular maintenance and watering through drip irrigation

Challenge

The Central Ridge Reserve Forest, one of Delhi's last green lungs, has been facing severe degradation due to urban encroachment, invasive species, and lack of active conservation efforts. The Jhandewalan to Karolbagh section in particular had become a hotspot for illegal dumping and loss of native biodiversity.

Solution

EcoLife Green partnered with DDA to launch a comprehensive restoration drive. The solution includes: removal of invasive species, plantation of 2,500+ native trees, creation of walking trails for eco-tourism, installation of signages and interpretation boards, and community engagement programs to ensure long-term conservation.

Impact

This project is currently in progress and has already shown positive results. The green cover is increasing, native birds and small mammals are returning, and the area is gradually being transformed into a model for urban forest conservation. It is expected to become a major green lung for Delhi.

Future Vision

Upon completion, the Jhandewalan-Karolbagh green corridor will serve as:

• A biodiversity hotspot within the city
• A recreational and educational space for citizens
• A model for urban forest conservation across India
• A stepping stone for connecting other green patches in Delhi
• An example of successful public-private partnership in conservation
